Presentation transcript:

Strategic Society and Tourism Statistics Meeting The I2010 Initiative that was adopted by the European Commission in June of last year is aimed at creating economic and employment growth in Europe by promoting an open and competitive digital economy. It represents a policy framework, coherent with the Lisbon strategy and it is made of 3 main objectives: A Single European Information Space, research and innovation in ICT , an inclusive Information Socity Anne Bucher i2010 coordination Unit i2010 and Lisbon Strategy Brussels, 11 February 2008

What do we measure ? Supply side: role of the ICT sector in driving growth, innovation and investment (Value added of ICT sector, R&D, broadband coverage and prices, competition on telecom markets etc.) Demand side: ICT take up by businesses, citizens, and government and impact of ICT on the economy (connectivity, use of services by individuals, eCommerce and eBusiness, digital skills, inclusion) Let’s now look at the indicators on the first pillar. They can be grouped in 4 main sub thematic areas and namely ……….

Benchmarking framework Benchmarking indicators: built upon the e-Europe 2005 core work, but with a broader scope (i.e. ICT research and e-business) and more emphasis on the impact of ICT use. the result of discussions with MS experts and Eurostat submitted to the i2010 High Level group annually monitored in the annual report The main sources of information for the benchmarking exercise are still the 2 Eurostat surveys on the use of ICT by households and enterprises, like in the e-Europe 2005 benchmarking exercise, but due to the broader scope additional sources are now playing a more important role. They include firstly other official statistics, like the Labour Force Survey, the National Accounts, the Structural Business statistics and the survey on Research and Development. Other instruments are represented by ad hoc studies, like the one on e-Government and surveys on telecom operators for the data on broadband penetration. In particular, the two surveys on ICT use managed by Eurostat and the National Statistical Institutes contain a core part that is going to be unchanged throughout the 5 years period of 2010, plus additional modules addressing more in detail a special topic each year.

Benchmarking i2010 Mix of sources: Community surveys on ICT use by households and enterprises are still the main instrument (like in e-Europe 2005) other official statistics (NA,..) ad hoc studies (e-Government) surveys of telecom operators
