Virginia House of Burgesses In 1624 King Charles I canceled the Virginia Company’s charter, making Virginia a royal colony. Colony would be controlled totally by the crown.

Virginia House of Burgesses Charles was constantly at odds with Parliament King allowed the House of burgesses to continue as an elected legislative body, however.

For what reasons was the House of Burgesses important?

Plymouth Pilgrims arrive in Massachusetts building a settlement. Before arriving in Plymouth the Pilgrims drew up a compact for rules needed to govern themselves Compact- a contract or agreement formed among people or consenting parties.

Mayflower Compact Prior to leaving for the New World 41 men signed the Mayflower Compact.

Mayflower Compact Mayflower Compact stated the government would create just and equal laws for the general good of the colony. Those signing the document promised to obey those laws.

Mayflower Compact All men could vote. The majority would rule. Established a tradition of direct democracy.
