3 English Influences on American Government ( title, write this information on the same page as the title lesson one) -1215 Magna Carta ( The Great Charter) * Nobles rebelled due to King John’s harsh treatment. * 1215 Nobles forced king to sign an agreement * Granted rights to all landowners * Rights included equal treatment under the law ( rule of law) * Trial by one’s peers * Limited the absolute power of the monarch

4 -Late 1300s English Parliament * King Henry III ( followed by John) met with nobles and church officials. * This group of advisors grows over time. * Expanded to include representatives of the common people. * By the late 1300s the group developed into a legislature * Two Houses: House of Commons and House of Lords

5 -1688 Glorious Revolution * Mid 1600’s power struggle * 1688 Parliament removes King James II * Placed his daughter and her husband William and Mary on the throne. * Demonstrated that Parliament’s powers were now stronger the monarch. * Monarch will never have more power than the legislature

6 -1689 English Bill of Rights *To clarify who’s in power Parliament creates English Bill of Rights *Monarch cannot suspend Parliament’s law, impose taxes, or raise an army without Parliament’s permission. *Members of Parliament were freely elected and were guaranteed freedom of speech. *All citizens have right to trials by jury * Banned cruel and unusual punishments

7 Enlightenment Thinkers ( title) Thomas Hobbes ( 1588-1679) *Social contract: people agreed to be ruled because their ruler pledges to protect their rights.

8 John Locke ( 1632-1704) * People have God-given natural rights ( life, liberty, and property) that the government must protect for common good * Published Tow Treaties of Government in which he wrote that people agrees to give up some rights and to be ruled by the government. Believed that the government should protect the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If government broke Social Contract, the people had the right to establish a new government.

9 Jean-Jacques Rousseau ( 1712-1778) *Wrote The Social Contract published in 1762 *People have the right to decide how they should be governed. * The legislative power belongs to the people. Baron de Montesquieu ( 1689-1755) * Developed the idea that the power of the government should be divided into 3 branches ( separation of powers) * This prevents any branch from being too powerful * Legislative, judicial, and executive branch

10 The First Colonial Governments ( title) Virginia House of Burgesses( Representative Government) * Jamestown 1 st permanent English Settlement * Founded 1607 by Virginia Company, a group of merchants from London. * Charter between King James I and Virginai Company * First colony that was managed by a governor and an appointed council.

11 Mayflower Compact * 1620 Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth, MA * Pilgrims knew they needed a plan to self govern * 41 men signed the compact on board the Mayflower * Signers pledged to obey the laws *Stated that “ government would make just and equal laws for the good of the colony) * All men who belonged to the church will vote and the majority will rule * Townhall meetings are a traditional form of direct democracy that is still seen in New England today.
