Tools for Visualization Tools for Managing the Project Tools for Risk Mitigation www.enchantedLearning.com Visual organizers let you use pictures to organize concepts. These are two examples, but there are many other types of charts.

These tools can be used for learning Tools for Visualization Tools for Managing the Project Tools for Risk Mitigation These tools can be used for learning These tools can also be used for design or brainstorming UML diagrams are often used to visualize a design

Terminology Tools for Visualization Tools for Managing the Project Tools for Risk Mitigation Terminology Activity – Something we need to do. Activities have duration Milestone – Completion of an activity. It is a single point. All activities and milestones comprise the project. Deliverable – The product of an activity. Delivery of a deliverable is often a milestone. Work breakdown structure – Describes each activity and milestone in a project and includes relationships among the activities. Precursor - Something that must be done before the current activity can begin. Due Date – The date that a milestone or activity is due to end. Duration – The amount of time that the activity will take to accomplish. Activity Graph – A visual chart of the activities, durations and dependencies.

Tools for Visualization Tools for Managing the Project Tools for Risk Mitigation Activity – Building a house Critical Path Management Model – circles are the milestones Given the time estimates, how long will this job take to complete? Given the calculation of time, what is the critical path? Given the critical path, how much “slack time” is there in the jobs not on the critical path? (Slack time is the available time – the time it takes to complete.)

Activity – Managing the project The critical path tells us … what? Tools for Visualization Tools for Managing the Project Tools for Risk Mitigation Activity – Managing the project The critical path tells us … what? Scenarios – what happens if….? AFUEWS – Allowance for unexpected events within scope. (Wiggle room).

Tools for Visualization Tools for Managing the Project Tools for Risk Mitigation Another tool – GANTT chart From (really) GANTTchart.com/history Bar chart to provide a visual mechanism for tracking progress on projects. Originally used in large construction projects. Dependencies are stated as start to start, start to finish, and finish to finish. Typically in most software, you can get information from the task performers and plug that into the software to continually evaluate where we stand on a project. See demo of MS Project – as one tool for producing GANTT charts (available through the MSDN Alliance…windows machines only).

What features should it have? Tools for Visualization Tools for Managing the Project Tools for Risk Mitigation Our voting system What features should it have? What major tasks should the work breakdown structure have? How are these related (dependencies)?

Tools for Visualization Tools for Managing the Project Tools for Risk Mitigation Author web site provides lots of checklists. Example of Risk Analysis checklist. What are some of the risks you can foresee in this project?
