What group held up democratic progress in both Brazil and Argentina until the 1980s? -Dictatorship -Beginnings of Democracy -Modern Brazil Mexico -P.R.I. -Early Democracy -Economic and Political Crisis Argentina -Lack of Democracy -Repression -Movement toward Democracy

Brazil’s Dictatorship After independence in 1822 from Portugal Brazil became a monarchy Brazil will also have dictatorships for 1965-1985, where they created huge debt from foreign investors.

Origins of Democracy In 1955 Juscelino Kubitschek was elected president, starting almost a decade of democracy Presidents had to try and deal with high debt, inflation, and a powerful wealthy class.

Modern Brazil In 1985 a new president was elected after 2o years of dictators. Cardozo helped the poor classes through reform and government aid. World Cup to be played in 2014 with huge protests from lower classes.

Mexico’s P.R.I. Institutional Revolutionary Party Political party who had control of Mexico for over 71 years Corrupt government only developed economy to help wealthy Mexicans

Early Democracy Even though the PRI held control for over 70 years, democracy was still put in place early. Mexico had a constitution created in 1917 Created to push for political reforms and be used as a guide for developing the country. Prevented military coups and dictatorships.

Crisis 1968 Protesters were massacred by the military, over 500 killed. Presidential candidate assassinated in 1994 as well as peasant revolt brought about issues. PRI voted out of office in 2000.

Lack of Democracy Dictatorships controlled Argentina for most of its recent history. 1946-1983 Military leaders take control by coups and popular revolts/ overthrows

Repression Political opponents of Dictators are eliminated Economical depression as well as militia and terrorists were common during 1970s-80s Killed over 20,000 of its own people who opposed leaders

Light of Democracy 1983 First truly free election, Raul Alfonsin named president Worked to rebuild economy Welcomed back artists and scientists Government aid to those below poverty line Budget cut to military funding
