KER Today’s assembly is to talk about Persistent Absence Explain that to pupils it may not be their fault (holidays) but wanted them to be a part of the assembly so they can see what impact poor attendance has.

Persistent Absence KER If you take too much time off school you will be categorised as PA or persistently absent. LA set this not us as a school.   Attendance at 90% or below = persistent absence. Unfortunately the LA look at you as a number and not at the reasons why you have been absent. Missing school will make you fall behind in lessons and will impact on your academic progress and achievement.

This is Simon. He is in Year 7 and has 90% attendance. Simon thinks this is pretty good, so do his parents. Are they right?

Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri This is practically part time! 90% Attendance = Half a day of learning missed each week through out the academic year!! Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri   What would your boss think if you were off this much? This is practically part time!

Let’s look a little closer 1 Full school year at 90% attendance = 4 whole weeks missed!! Sep Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul

Let’s look even closer 90% attendance over 5 years at school = Half a school year missed!! Sep Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul

What impact might this have on Simon’s life What impact might this have on Simon’s life? Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = a GCSE grade DROP in achievement KER

But what about the impact on Simon’s life after school? Graduate degree Post-16 qualifications 5 GCSEs No qualifications JPJ

Attendance Percentage Total number of days absent in a school year 80% 38 Days of absence 85% 28 Days of absence 90% 19 Days of absence 95% 9 Days of absence 97% 5 Days of absence 100% 0 Days of absence JPJ

Look how easy it is to fall into the PA category! The school year How many days a term does it take to fall into the Persist Half term 1 Approximately 3 ½ days off school from September until October half term holiday will make you a PA student. Half terms 1-2 Approximately 7 days off school from September until the Christmas holiday will make you a PA student. Half terms 1-3 Approximately 10 days off school from September until February half term will make you a PA student. Half terms 1-4 Approximately 12 ½ days off school from September until the Easter holidays will make you a PA student. Half terms 1-5 Approximately 15 ½ days off school from September until May half term will make you a PA student. Half terms 1-6 19 days off school for the full academic year (September until the end of summer term in July) will make you a PA student JPJ

Aim High If you can improve your attendance by 1%, research shows you could see a 5-6% improvement in your attainment. EJT

It’s never too late!! There are 190 school days that you must attend every year (380 sessions) The more you attend school the more your percentage will increase!! Please come and see us to find out how many days you need to attend to get up to 90% EJT

Make every minute of every lesson of every day count! EJT

Take control of your own attendance to take control of your future success! Make sure you know your attendance figure – our school expectation is at least 95% Only take days off where you are genuinely too ill to come to school. Don’t take holidays in term time. Avoid doctors, dentists and optician appointments in the school day. There are 175 days a year when you are not at school for appointments and holidays. If you need to speak to someone about your absence, please speak to your PLT OR the Attendance team. EJT

Let’s begin to make those changes now!
