“Don’t You Care?” Mark 4:35-41 08/09/2009 Dr. Dane Boyles

Mark 4:35-37 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.

Mark 4:38-39 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

Mark 4:40-41 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

“Don’t You Care?” One miracle is our total focus this morning because it’s a miracle that gives hope. Every person here can be certain of this one thing IN LIFE: you’re going to experience storms.

“Don’t You Care?” But for the Christian, this miracle functions as a prefix to our minds. This spiritual knowledge makes us responsible for interjecting spiritual realities into our situations!

“Don’t You Care?” THE CERTAINTY OF JESUS BEING IN THE BOAT WITH YOU! The disciples were confident that they were in charge. 35 “Let us go over to the other side.” (Mark 4:35)

Mark 4:36 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was,

“Don’t You Care?” “He can’t hack it like us; those carpenters.” All their expertise was useless. They couldn’t sail their way out of this one.

“Don’t You Care?” 23 …the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. (Luke 8:23).

“Don’t You Care?” 38 Don’t you care if we drown? (Mark 4:38) When they woke Him up, were they expecting Him to perform a miracle? 38 Don’t you care if we drown? (Mark 4:38)

“Don’t You Care?” We ask Jesus that all the time. 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” (Mark 4:39) 39 Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. (Mark 4:39)

Psalm 107:23, 27-8 23 Others went out on the sea in ships; 27 They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits’ end. 28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.

“Don’t You Care?” 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. (Psa. 107:27-29) 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” (Mark 4:41)

“Don’t You Care?” 40 …“Why are you so afraid? (Mark 4:40) Suddenly they see that this Jesus is God! 40 …“Why are you so afraid? (Mark 4:40) 40 …Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40) Faith is supposed to drive out fear.

“Don’t You Care?” This is what God has been teaching us since the beginning. Moses Jonah Abraham Gideon Esther Mary

“Don’t You Care?” Their initial response was never: Yes. I am up to that challenge. I think I can handle that. Their first response to a God-sized calling was fear. Jesus knew that storms have a way of teaching what nothing else can.

“Don’t You Care?” 10 Many will be purified, made spotless and refined. (Daniel 12:10)

James 1:2 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,

James 1:3-4 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

“Don’t You Care?” When we go through storms, He doesn’t expect us not to have to deal with our fear. But He does expect that, when we interject Jesus into the situation, our fear will be eclipsed.

“Don’t You Care?” It is based on a belief that what ever happens, His mission in our life cannot fail.

“Don’t You Care?” So whatever storm you’re going through, there is One certainty — JESUS is with you.
