2 Luke 8:16-25 16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”

3 19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” 21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”

4 22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”

5 He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

(responsibility) Small groups/discipleship – “those who come in” Jesus is not a concealer, he is a revealer. So… Responding in an accountable way.

7 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen
18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.” What are you going to do with what you hear? Obedience is crucial. Think about the women. Do you think they understood more or less as they followed? John 7:15- 17 Romans 12:2

8 John 7:  The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?” 16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. Romans 12:2 - 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

9 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” 21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.” “Those who make a right response to the word of God as brought by Jesus vindicate the sower’s confidence in the seed (4-8), demonstrate that they know the mysteries of the Kingdom of God (9-10), avoid the perils that would lead to miscarriage in the life of faith (11-15), shine as revealing light as they live out the content of what they have heard (16-18), and now find themselves to be part of an intimate family community with Jesus himself (19-21).” – Word Biblical Commentary Include piece about sin here.

10 Why obey. What does it gain me
Why obey? What does it gain me? It’s doesn’t cause God to love me more, why do it? Talking about obedience gets sticky really quickly because as humans we try to make faith programmatic. Story of Jesus calming the storm helps us understand more of why we obey.

11 “Master, Master, we’re going to drown
“Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” Disciples were: Called by Jesus, following, instructed, obeying/shining/produci ng a crop and yet…. Where is your faith?

12 Do you believe that Jesus has your best interest in mind
Do you believe that Jesus has your best interest in mind? Do you believe that he cares for you? Do you believe that he loves you and wants the best for you more than anyone else? Do you believe Jesus knows what’s best for you even more than you do? That’s why we obey! Not because Jesus is a dictator. Because his life for us is the best! God’s sovereignty is the focus of the end of this passage. It brings God glory when his creation obeys. What’s the one thing I want you to know? Obedience is important. There is a long list of reasons why. We have touched on two or three this morning.
