Most important events in 2009 Entry into force of the Regulation on European Statistics - changes in confidentiality governance Establishment of a Working Group on Statistical Confidentiality New architecture and decision-taking structure for the implementation of the new legal framework for confidentiality (governance structure) Revision of Regulation 831/2002

The revised general strategy for statistical confidentiality A- SHORT TERM PROPOSALS Actions related to revision of Commission Regulation 831/2002 Actions related to wider access to confidential data for scientific purposes - Remote access - Remote execution - Data archives - Safe centres B- MEDIUM TERM PROPOSALS Actions related to the harmonisation and improvement of SDC methods and tools - Disclosure protection of EU aggregates - Harmonisation of SDC methods in Eurostat/ESS Other actions - Public use files

Objectives for 2010 Progress with the revision of the 831/2002 Built the necessary infrastructure in Eurostat ready to handle remote access and remote execution Implement the short term proposals for remote access (access through safe centres) Establish bilateral agreements on licensing and delocalisation of safe centres Discuss possibilities for closer collaboration with data archives

Medium term objectives Harmonisation of SDC principles and guidelines Revision of current practices in Eurostat and then at the ESS level Envisaged instruments: Confidentiality charters Practical guidelines recommending certain SDC techniques Recommended tools, easy to use and accessible for everyone Public use files (PUFs) Practical guidelines to create PUFs
