john John 10.1–42 Conflict 04

Questions:

1. Why did Jesus say the sheep follow their shepherd (10.1–6)?

2. What did Jesus say a good shepherd does for his sheep (10.7–18)?

3. What were the reactions of the people to Jesus’s speech about sheep and shepherd (10.19–21)?

4. What blessings do the sheep of Jesus receive (10.22–30)?

5. Why did the Jews say they were going to stone Jesus (10.31–39)?

6. What did the people “across the Jordan” say about Jesus (10.40–42)?

Digging Deeper:

7. The illustration of the sheep and shepherd in 10 7. The illustration of the sheep and shepherd in 10.1–18 should have been familiar to the audience, but they failed to understand (10.6). What OT passages should the audience have been thinking about?

8. What does 10.16 mean and what other passages help us to understand the meaning? How do the Mormons use this passage?

9. How does Jesus fulfill the roles of Good Shepherd (John 10), Great Shepherd (Hebrews 13.20) and Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5.4)?

10. What is the Feast of Dedication and where and when did it originate (10.22)?

11. What Old Testament passage did Jesus quote in 10. 34 11. What Old Testament passage did Jesus quote in 10.34? What does this passage mean?

Applications:

12. Jesus said, “I am the door of the sheep” (10. 7, 9) 12. Jesus said, “I am the door of the sheep” (10.7, 9). How does a person enter through the door of Jesus into his fold?

13. How do we follow Jesus as the Good Shepherd?

14. It is true that no one has the power to snatch any of the sheep that belong to Jesus out of his hand (10.28–29; cf. Romans 8.31–39). Does this mean we can never fall away and be separated from God as the Calvinists teach (cf. Jude 21)? Explain.
