WHAT’S SO DIFFERENT ABOUT THE NEW EDITION? Making the Connection between concepts throughout the course Linked Objectives Getting Ready for the Next Section Maintaining Your Skills Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra, like all math courses, builds up cumulatively from concept to concept. Therefore, to help you (students make the connection), the author has integrated new pedagogy to guide students to discover relationships between concepts. The goal is to help students master the cumulative concepts in this course and cross the bridge into the next level of mathematics and other course work. Listed above are some of the features that will help students bridge the connections between concepts throughout the entire course.

NOTE TO INSTRUCTORS: IF YOU ARE NOT REQUIRING ENHANCED WEBASSIGN AS YOUR ONLINE HOMEWORK SYSTEM, PLEASE DELETE SLIDES 7-20. Enhanced WebAssign allows you to complete and submit homework assignments securely online-and is a required component to your mathematics course.

REGISTERING AND LOG-IN Your textbook should include a student access code card, containing a unique activation code enabling you to register at WebAssign. In order to properly register, you will also need 3 pieces of information from your instructor, a unique User Name, unique Password and an institution code. Use this matrix to determine how what your account information is. NOTE TO INSTRUCTORS: When setting up your roster, you will be required to set up a user name/password for each student. It is recommended that you use a simple matrix to easily disseminate the information to your students. For Username: consider using first initial, last name or first name/last name For Password: consider using the same password for all students. Students will be allowed to alter their password after registration. For Institution Code: WebAssign will assign your school a unique institution code, which will be the same for all students. Be sure and add this information to this slide. USER NAME: PASSWORD: INSTITUTION CODE:

REGISTERING AND LOG-IN www.webassign.net Visit www.webassign.net and select LOG-IN. Enter the information your instructor provided and click the Log In button.

ENTERING ACCESS CODES After logging in for the first time, you will be prompted to enter your access code. Select the proper prefix from the drop-down menu. If you do not have an access code card in your textbook, you can purchase one online by selecting “Purchase an access code online” If you have not yet purchased your course materials, you can access your homework assignments for 2 weeks after the course start date without entering an access code by selecting “Continue without entering an access code”.

CHANGING YOUR PASSWORD After completing your registration, you can change your password by selecting “My Options” and entering a new password.

COMPLETING ASSIGNMENTS Elementary Algebra, Section 6, Summer 2007 After logging in, you will see your class homepage. Any current assignments will be listed under “My Assignments”. To start the assignment, simply select it.

SAMPLE ASSIGNMENT Answer multiple-select questions by clicking the check boxes to the left of your responses. Check boxes, which allow you to choose more than one of several alternatives, are used in WebAssign for multiple-select questions. You can uncheck a box simply by clicking the box again. Answer fill-in-the-blank questions by entering a response in each box provided, whether the box is located within the question or provided at the end of the question. Spelling counts, so please check your answers before submitting the assignment. In general, capitalization and extra spaces will not matter, but not always. Answer rank-order questions by listing the options, largest to smallest. In most questions an example will be given to guide you. You should only use the characters > and = between the numbers or letters representing the various choices. Since a rank-order question uses a fill-in-the-blank format, the exact characters you type are important. Follow the instructions in the question carefully. Answer numerical questions by entering a number into the answer box provided for each question. As with most questions in WebAssign, “spelling counts”—or, in this case, entering numbers accurately counts—so, please check your answers before submitting the assignment. The only characters accepted for a numerical answer are numbers, +, -, *, /, (, ), and the letter e or E. You cannot enter “pi” for 3.14159.

ENTERING FREE RESPONSES WITH THE MATH PALETTE Or, you may be able to use a math palette to enter the free response. Simply click on OPEN MATH PALETTE to open the palette. Then, select the type of function you need to enter to open the drop-down menu. Clicking on an icon from the menu populates that function into the math palette. Simply type the values you need and click SUBMIT

ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION You can tell how an assignment is setup by clicking Submission Options at the top of the assignment. The number of submissions allowed is set up by the instructor and can be different for each question part on the assignment. If the instructor allows submissions by individual question parts, the first time you answer and submit a question will count as your first submission of that question. If you make a change to the answer and resubmit the question, that will count as your second submission. If you do not make a change to an answer, subsequent submissions of the answer do not count as additional submissions.

HINTS AND FEEDBACK You will notice some questions may have hints associated with them. Use these hints to help you get to the right solution. Note that hints will vary from problem to problem and not every problem will have a hint associated with it. Some hints may direct you to a section of the text to review, while others may provide extra practice problems or tutorials and still others may provide a simulation to manipulate or video to watch. Selecting a hint will not affect your final grade. After submitting your answers, you will receive a line of feedback, helping you decide how best to alter your answer to get to the right solution.

REQUESTING HELP Elementary Algebra, Summer 2007 Elementary Algebra, Summer 2007 Ask Your Teacher is a tutorial feature administered by your instructor. Your instructor will decide whether the Ask Your Teacher is available to your class. If your instructor enables Ask Your Teacher, there will be a link at the end of your assignments. Questions to Ask Your Teacher are always linked to an assignment. Clicking the Ask Your Teacher button displays a popup window for you to enter your question. Please provide as much detail as you can about how you worked your problem, so that the instructor or tutor can provide useful advice. The length of time you must wait depends on the person assigned to answer Ask Your Teacher for your course. Ask your instructor if you have any concerns. Your question and replies to your question will be posted to the linked assignment.

CLASS CALENDAR The Calendar link brings up your own personal calendar showing all of your assignments on their due dates and any personal calendar events you have added.

COMMUNICATION Elementary Algebra, Summer 2007 Elementary Algebra, Summer 2007 The Communication link gives you access to private messages and course forums, if you instructor has enabled these features. The forums are for discussions with all the members of your class. Your instructor can create forums and you can create topics within a forum or contribute to a current topic. Private Messages are for communications between you and your instructor. You can click the New Message link and write your instructor a message. If your instructor has disabled private messages, there will not be a New Message link.
