Characteristics of Arthropods Jointed appendages

Exoskeleton

Segmented bodies

Other Characteristics: Open circulatory system Head and well developed brain – well aware of the environment around them. Most have compound eyes

Centipedes and millipedes Classes of Arthropods Centipedes and millipedes Centipedes are carnivores – one set of legs per segment – venomous fangs Millipedes are herbivores – two sets of legs per segment

Crustaceans Almost all aquatic – gills – mandibles – two pair of antennae – two compound eyes

Arachnids Two main body parts – no compound eyes – spiders, mites, ticks, etc.

Insect Three body sections – six legs – one pair of antennae – usually one or two pair of wings Ampulex dementor – named after HP character b/c it sucks the life out of it’s victims
