Who May Ascend? Peter Fitch, St. Croix Vineyard Sunday, September 2, 2018 Priceless Psalm Series: 24 & 25

The Man on a Mission to End Loneliness BBC 1 Amazing Humans (youtube) The Man on a Mission to End Loneliness BBC 1 Amazing Humans (youtube) . . . Picture of “best self”?

Psalm 24 1 The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. 2 For He has founded it upon the seas And established it upon the rivers. 3 Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood And has not sworn deceitfully.

Psalm 24 5 He shall receive a blessing from the Lord And righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 This is the generation of those who seek Him, Who seek Your face—even Jacob. Selah. 7 Lift up your heads, O gates, And be lifted up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in!

Psalm 24 8 Who is the King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O gates, And lift them up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in! 10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.

What do you see?

Locational Paradox The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains . . . This reminds me of the song we’ve been singing, “Everything is Holy Now” Yet there is a recognition that God, who in other places is said to fill all in all, is also in a specialized location, the Hill of the Lord (Jerusalem, where the temple is, on top of Mount Zion) God is in and through everything, and is also approachable as though He lived in a particular place

Attitudes in Worship: Negative Protecting God from Sinners Pride in the Priestly Role Pride in “Special Connection” Myth of Deserved Restitution Setting Moral Standards (in a way that creates barriers, takes away life)

Attitudes in Worship: Positive Longing for Purity Calling People to their “Best Self” Reminding Us of What a Privilege it Is to Seek, to Know God’s Presence Setting Moral Standards (in a way that creates character, integrity and faithfulness) Establishing Societal Expectations A Way to Approach God Together
