DEFINITIONS OF TERMS

DEFINITIONS OF TERMS GUIDANCE - is the help given by a person to another in making intelligent choices ,judgments and adjustments that are individually and socially desirable. COUNSELING - is the art of helping other help themselves.

DEFINITIONS OF TERMS GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING - is the assistance given or offered to people either as an individual or as a group for self understanding, self actualization and self direction.

OBJECTIVES a. To aid the counselee to grow in his independence and ability to be responsible for himself. b. To help the individual discover his needs to assess his potentialities gradually to develop, life goals that are individually satisfying and socially desirable.

COMMON CAUSES OF COUNSELING FAILURE

COMMON CAUSES OF COUNSELING FAILURE 1. Failure to listen. 2. Failure to observe the non- verbal effort of the counselee, such as action, gestures and tone of voice. 3. Failure to use the non-verbal communications tools effectively.

COMMON CAUSES OF COUNSELING FAILURE 4. Failure to allow for differentials in education, culture and age. 5. Failure to keep technical or professional words out of conversation. 6. Failure to give enough time for the counselee to speak.

COMMON CAUSES OF COUNSELING FAILURE 7. Failure to clarify the questions you ask or try to answer. 8. Failure to recognize the therapeutic value of conversation with the counselee. 9. Failure to think before you speak. 10. Failure to let the counselee do most of talking.

QUALITIES OF A GOOD COUNSELOR

QUALITIES OF A GOOD COUNSELOR 1. Has a good self understanding. 2. Sensitive to the feelings of others. 3. Emphatic understanding for the counselee. 4. Approachable , sincere and genuine. 5. Good listener. 6. Trusted with confidential matter. 7. Patient and non-judgment.

PROCEDURES 1. Check records 2. Obtain a room for counseling. BEFORE: 1. Check records 2. Obtain a room for counseling. 3. Establish a time limit. DURING: 1. Welcome the individual in a friendly manner. 2. Invite the counselee to have a sit. 3. Put the individual at ease.

PROCEDURES 4. Let the individual do most of talking. 5. Let the individual express his ideas and feeling in his own words. 6. Allow some period of silence. 7. Encourage individual to continue talking. 8. Give alternatives. 9. Referral 10. Close each session in positive note.

AFTER: Make a follow up to ensure adequate action is taken to solve the problem.

COUNSELING APPROACHES

COUNSELING APPROACHES DIRECTIVE APPROACH Problem centered or counselor centered. Counselor as a father figure specialist. Short term approach to problem solving. Appropriation for immature, confused, insecure counselee.

COUNSELING APPROACHES B. NON-DIRECTIVE APPROACH Counselee centered Counselee works out solutions to his problem through personal insight judgment and realization of facts. Counselee develops self-understanding.

COUNSELING APPROACHES C. ECLECTIC APPROACH. - Combination of directive and non-directive approach. - Selecting from different systems, doctrines of sources. - Provide adjustments for counselor and counselee to participate in defining, analyzing and solving the problem. - Counselee is responsible for planning his life and his own decisions, but he may initially needs from the counselor. - Technique involves here to follow the problem solving process.
