Current Electricity Sections 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 12.4

What is Current Electricity? Involves the flow of electrons in a controlled way through a conductor.

Electric Circuits A circuit is the path that the electron flow through. Basic parts of a circuit: Source – the source of electrons (battery, etc) Conductor – provides a path for the electrons (wires) Load – converts the electrical energy into other forms of energy (light bulb, motor, etc) Switch – controls the flow of electrons Open switch = no flow of electrons Closed switch = flow of electrons

Electrical Energy Measured in Joules (J) Electrical devices use electrical energy to do work (measured in Watts  W) Light bulb: electrical energy  light energy Motor: electrical energy  motion

Sources of Electrical Energy Electric Cells: a device that coverts chemical energy into electrical energy (a.k.a. a battery) Primary cell – can only be used once Secondary cell – can be recharged Fuel Cells: a special kind of electric cell through which a continuous supply of chemicals is pumped as the cell operates.
