Smart Card The Future Is Here… By Salman Awan

Introduction Smart cards represent a new technology that has tremendous potential for enhancing the security of distributed systems. A smart card is a credit card-sized, tamper-resistant security device that offers functions for secure information storage and information processing that rely on VLSI chip technology. A smart card is a card with a computer chip embedded on its face, its able to hold more information than an ordinary credit card with a magnetic strip. Smart card technology can be used with pay phones, health care, transportation, identification, retail, loyalty programs and banking.

Example

Features Smart Cards are convenient. They can store information, such as passwords, bookmarks, account information and so on. Smart Cards are portable. They go where you go, making it easier than ever to use the internet. Smart Cards are safe. They come equipped with an arsenal of security features.

Goal Microsoft is including support for Smart Cards with Windows 2000 IBM, Compaq, and HP have PCs with a Smart Card Reader as standard equipment Sun has developed an operating system using Java for Smart Cards call JavaCard Microsoft has developed an operating system for Smart Cards called Windows for Smart Cards Card Issuers like AMEX are launching credit card products with Smart Card Technology MasterCard, VISA, and Europay all have active smart card programs for their members
