Getting started at the Libraries www.library.yorku.ca Library Catalogue Mention that main search box searches all libraries’ collections. Does not search at article level. Do quick example in advanced search mode e.g. (Outsourcing or offshoring) and (china or india) Useful when want to find a database by name, e.g. Proquest Business. Mention business library site. Bronfman Business Library – Getting help including consultations Bronfman Library Homepage: http://www.library.yorku.ca/cms/bbl Top 10 is basic pointers but useful as FAQ Ways of getting help – Can use usual reference services including chat. Probably most likely to want to avail of subject liaison librarians Show them this page. Mention best way to get familiar with subject specific databases. Go here to see a list of subject liaison librarians

Web pages designed for graduate students Graduate student library guide especially important for them. Special services available. Graduate student reading room on fourth floor Scott Library – door access code. Borrowing privileges – 100 day loans as doctoral students and up to 80 items Mention about printing privileges – they get $300 as doctoral students – show the web page. Also mention they can suggest books for purchase – show link. Show the subject research guides and mention that we’ll go in to the business research guides in more detail later. Sometimes they may be doing interdisciplinary research – may need to connect with other subject librarians or other guides. Mention stats and data guide too. Encourage them to explore other links available here and that we will be showing things as we go. Select students tab

Obtaining resources not available at York University Libraries Direct Borrowing Privileges i.e. borrowing in person at another Canadian university libraries, including University of Toronto (UofT fee applies) Interlibrary loan services via RACER Register with RACER so you have an account Requests submitted online No charge for books, and up to 50 journal articles free per year for graduate students Useful starting point for key information – go back to graduate student info page and click on borrow from other libraries. Talk about direct borrowing and mention UofT charges. Talk about their privileges using RACER. Do a demo using RACER. Search for a book e.g. The Tipping Point by Gladwell and then show them blank request form option is easiest thing to use for article requests

Bronfman Business Library – Business databases A-Z & research guides Show A-Z list – explain includes subscription databases and reocmmended web sites. Not e-journals. Often links to tutorials on these databases. It’s a comprehensive list of what we have. If want to have guides to resources available by subject then go to the guides page. Show the guides page. Go in to the company research guide as an example and the finance research guide. Briefly outline how the navigation works and types of information they can expect to find. Show where the specialized finance database guides are e.g. Bloomberg and WRDS. Mention if need industry information it’s a good idea to consult the industry research checklist available under 601 links. Finish by going to articles guide and explain what key databases we have at York are both for journals and news. Mention that it can be very useful to use tools like Zotero in tandem with articles databases as they gather relevant readings and explain we’ll do a demo using Proquest Business and and we’ll pull some citations in to Zotero.

Storing, organizing and managing citations and auto generation of bibliographies- RefWorks/Zotero Free to all York students, staff and faculty Web-based Allows you to create a database of citations or references to resources (books, journal articles, web sites, etc.) Facilitates the automatic insertion of citations within a research paper as in-text references, footnotes, or endnotes, and the creation of a formatted bibliography using a citation style of choice More information available on our web site

Demonstration – Proquest Business & Zotero Do a search of Proquest Business. Mention it comprises various databases including Canadian component. Search social responsibility and mining Show how they can set up an alert either for a keyword search or a journal pub. Talk about Find it @ York links/Recommended Topics Show how you can pull the articles in to Zotero including pdfs Show how to generate bibliography Then go to the Footnotes and Bibliography guide and show them where they find the Zotero guide where there is a webinar they can listen to. Alerts are a handy feature of most articles databases

Dissertation and theses databases Guide available: http://www.library.yorku.ca/cms/help-with-research/findingtheses/ Show the guide. Mention about York theses. Do a demo using Proquest digital dissertations. Proquest Digital Dissertations and Theses This database contains citations and abstracts of doctoral dissertations and some masters theses from colleges and universities in North America and Europe. Citations are available from 1861 to the present. Abstracts are available for dissertations from 1980 to the present and for masters theses from 1988 to the present. From 1997, sometimes earlier, the full-text of some dissertations and theses may be downloaded for free in PDF format.
