Mark 12:13 Later the leaders sent some Pharisees and supporters of Herod to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested. (NLT)

Mark 12:14 “Teacher,” they said, “we know how honest you are. You are impartial and don’t play favorites. You teach the way of God truthfully. Now tell us— is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” (NLT)

Mark 12:15 “Should we pay them, or shouldn’t we?” Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said, “Why are you trying to trap me? Show me a Roman coin, and I’ll tell you.” (NLT)

Mark 12:16 When they handed it to him, he asked, “Whose picture and title are stamped on it?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. (NLT)

Mark 12:17 “Well, then,” Jesus said, “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” (NLT)

His reply completely amazed them. And they were amazed at him. Mark 12:17 His reply completely amazed them. And they were amazed at him. (NLT)

What Do We Owe Our Government? Respect & honor

It is right to give to human government that honor and respect due to human government. But don’t give to human government what is meant only for God.

What Do We Owe Our Government? Respect & honor Submission

1 Peter 2:13-14 For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, or the officials he has appointed. (NLT)

1 Peter 2:14 For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right. (NLT)

1 Peter 2:15 It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you. (NLT)

1 Peter 2:16 For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. (NLT)

1 Peter 2:17 Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king. (NLT)

Titus 3:1 Remind the believers to submit to the government and its officers. They should be obedient, always ready to do what is good. (NLT)

Romans 13:1 Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. (NLT)

Romans 13:2 So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. (NLT)

Romans 13:3 For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. (NLT)

Romans 13:4 The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. (NLT)

Romans 13:5 So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience. (NLT)

Romans 13:6 Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. (NLT)

Romans 13:7 Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority. (NLT)

What Do We Owe Our Government? Respect & honor Submission Prayer

1 Timothy 2:1 I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. (NLT)

1 Timothy 2:2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. (NLT)

1 Timothy 2:3-4 This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. (NLT)

1 Timothy 2:5 For, there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity— the man Christ Jesus. (NLT)

1 Timothy 2:6 He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time. (NLT)

What Do We Owe Our Government? Respect & honor Submission Prayer Support and participation in the process

What Do We Owe God? Undying allegiance and affection

Mark 12:29 Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord.’ (NLT)

Mark 12:30 ‘And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’” (NLT)

What Do We Owe God? Undying allegiance and affection Our bodies

Romans 12:1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice— the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. (NLT)

Romans 12:2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (NLT)

What Do We Owe God? Undying allegiance and affection Our bodies Our relationships

Mark 12:31 “The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” (NLT)

What Do We Owe God? Undying allegiance and affection Our bodies Our relationships Our resources
