Submission Title: [Extend-Superframe and Extend-GTS Structure] Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: [Extend-Superframe and Extend-GTS Structure] Date Submitted: [Jan 12, 2007 ] Source: [Xin Wang, Pei Liu, Hui Yang, Chenyang Yang, Liang Li] Company: [Beihang University, HiSilcon, Vinno] Address: [37# XueYuan Road, Bejing] Voice:[+86-10-8231-7213], E-Mail:[athody@vip.sina.com] Re: [IEEE 802.15.4c group] Abstract: [The extend superframe and GTS proposal is presented in this document. This extension can improve the throughput and latency performance of WPANs, and it’s compatible with the current standard.] Purpose: [To encourage discussion.] Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the Chinese WPAN group. It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). Outline Motivation E-Superframe & E-GTS Structure Modifications Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Motivation WPAN chips are applied in many types of electronic devices, including personal devices, WSN devices, etc. Different equipments require different QoS. The current superframe structure may not offer different QoS within one WPAN. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Current Superframe In order to save the energy of the power-limited device, the throughput of WPAN may decrease dramatically or the latency may increase. Otherwise, the energy efficiency will fall for guaranteeing the throughput and latency. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Current GTS The INACTIVE period is not utilized The direction of GTS is either uplink or downlink, Only one direction is allowed in one GTS. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

E-Superframe & E-GTS Extend-Superframe: Extend-GTS: Let energy-unlimited device to utilize INACTIVE period of the superframe for improving the throughput; Extend-GTS: A more flexible way to use GTS which makes the devices can communication with each other within one GTS for reducing latency and jitter. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Extend-Superframe Structure (1) Utilize the inactive period of the superframe: Guarantee the QoS of communication throughput for desired device in the WPAN, which are energy unlimited ones Avoid the extra energy consumption to the energy limited devices. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Extend-Superframe Structure (2) Allocate the last GTS to serve the energy unlimited device. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Extend-Superframe Structure (3) Extend the GTS to INACTIVE period. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Extend-GTS for Superframe Derive one GTS into sub-slots, where two devices can communicate with each other under the instruction of coordinator. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Operation Procedure for Extend GTS The operate procedure of the extend GTS: 2-Way GTS (C: coordinator, A and B: nodes): 4-Way GTS (C: coordinator, A and B: nodes): Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Operation Procedure & Modifications The device with E-Superframe and E-GTS support should set macRxOnWhenIdle to TRUE. It should keep the Rx on during CFP and INACTIVE period. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Modified GTS Request Cmd Bits:0-3 4 5 6 7 GTS length GTS direction Characteristics Type E-GTS A-GTS Step 1: The device send GTS Request Command to the Coordinator. The GTS characteristics field in the GTS Request Command is modified. E-GTS: Request for a E-GTS which can support 2-way or 4-way transmission. If E-GTS is set, GTS direction bit indicates the GTS is a 2-way or 4-way GTS. A-GTS: The GTS can append to the INACTIVE period of the superframe. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

GTS Allocation Notification Step 2: If the GTS request from the device is confirmed. The Coordinator will put the GTS allocation information in the BEACON frame. The format of the BEACON frame is same as the current standard. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

E-GTS Characteristics E-GTS Allocation Step 3: When E-GTS begin, the Coordinator will transmit a E-GTS Allocation command. E-GTS Allocation Command: Octets:7 1 MHR field Command Frame ID E-GTS Characteristics Subslot Length Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

E-GTS Characteristics Field Bits:0 1 2-7 2/4-way Append to INACTIVE Reserved 2/4-way: The E-GTS is a 2-way GTS or 4-way GTS. Append to INACTIVE: The E-GTS can append to the INACTIVE period. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Data Transmission in E-GTS 2-way GTS: The Device sends the frame to Coordinator, then Coordinator forwards the frame to its dest. Device. If the Coordinator fails receiving the frame in the receiving slot, it will retransmit the E-GTS Allocation Command Frame in the next forwarding slot. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li

Data Transmission in E-GTS 4-way GTS: The Device sends the frame to Coordinator, then Coordinator forwards the frame to its dest. Device. Received the frame, the dest. Device sends its own data frame to Coordinator and Coordinator forwards the received data. If the Coordinator fails receiving the frame in the receiving slot, it will retransmit the E-GTS Allocation Command Frame in the next forwarding slot. Submission X Wang, P Liu, L Li
