Presentation transcript:

Merchants These people had jobs that weren’t directly a part of farming, like peasants and ceorls. Their jobs would have provided goods or services to other people in Anglo-Saxon communities. In other words, merchants were shopskeepers. For example, some common jobs were bakers, carpenters, cooks, butchers, and blacksmiths.

Peasants lived on farms that looked like this Peasants lived on farms that looked like this. Farming was extremely important to Anglo-Saxon England. Ceorls (churls) were peasants, but ranked higher than most other peasant farmers. They could go and work for any lord. He paid fees directly to the king. These people were able to take up arms and fight for the king. This could lead to them rising in the ranks of Anglo-Saxon society and becoming thegns.

Slaves were owned by farmers and they would do a lot of the manual labour that was necessary on farms. They would not receive pay for this work, but would be allowed to live at the farmstead.
