Dorian Gray the archetype of male youth and beauty always young, always cursed
Basil Hallward the painter, infatuated with Dorian´s beauty in love with Dorian
Lord Henry (Harry) Wotton a cynical nobelman, self-proclaimed hedonist possessed of “wrong, fascinating, poisonous, delightful theories.” Dorian falls under his spell completely himself fails to realize the implications of most of what he says.
The story The novel begins with Lord Henry surveying Basil Hallward painting the portrait of a good looking man named Dorian Gray. Dorian arrives later and meets Wotton. After hearing Lord Henry's world view, Dorian falls under his spell so completely and begins to think that beauty is the only worthwhile aspect of life, the only thing left to pursue. Realizing that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian enunciates his wish to sell his soul to ensure the portrait Basil has painted would age rather than himself. Dorian's wish is fulfilled. Under the influence of Lord Henry, Dorian begins to live licentious life. At the same time, the portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging.
