Eukaryotic Cell Organelles

Essential Question: What is the Job of each Organelle?

Is this a plant or animal cell?

Is this a plant or animal cell?

Is this a plant or animal cell?

1) Cell Wall Found only in plants Support & protection Like a wall

2) Plasma (Cell) Membrane

Jelly-like fluid that surrounds organelles 3) Cytoplasm Jelly-like fluid that surrounds organelles

4) Nucleus The “brain” of the cell. Controls the cell’s activities. Holds the DNA. 5) Nuclear Membrane Controls what goes in and out of the nucleus

6) NucleOlus In the center of the nucleus Makes the ribosomes

7) Ribosomes Look like tiny dots! Make proteins from DNA’s message.

8) Chloroplast Captures the sun’s energy and makes sugar Contains chlorophyll http://www.biologyreference.com/images/biol_01_img0077.jpg

9) Chromosome Inside the nucleus DNA Holds your genetic info/instructions

Endoplasmic Reticulum ER can be rough (has ribosomes) or smooth (no ribosomes) Transports proteins around the cell; transportation system of the cell

10) Rough ER ~ makes proteins 11) Smooth ER ~ makes lipids

12) Golgi Body - flat sacs - Modifies, packages and ships proteins around the cell and to the outside of the cell

Breaks down and recycles old cell parts 13) Lysosomes Breaks down and recycles old cell parts http://www.jdaross.cwc.net/images/lysosome.gif

Used AS storage for water, sugar, salts, wastes 14) Vacuole Used AS storage for water, sugar, salts, wastes http://library.thinkquest.org/3564/Cells/cell93.gif

Vacuole is LARGE in plants & small in animals

15) Mitochondrion Powerhouse of the cell! Breaks down sugar to make ATP (energy).

16) Cytoskeleton Supports the cell/gives it shape Helps the organelles move http://www.biologyreference.com/images/biol_01_img0077.jpg

17) Centrioles Helps the animal cell divide Not found in plant cells http://www.funhousefilms.com/centriol.jpg

18) Cilia ~ hair-like projections that help the cell move

Flagella ~ whip-like projection that helps the cell move 19) Flagella ~ whip-like projection that helps the cell move
