Early Egyptian civilization began as a result of its location along the Nile River. Cairo, Egypt today

Early Egypt was the first to develop a system of irrigation and the calendar (to predict the annual flooding of the Nile River).

Early Mesopotamian civilizations began as a result of their locations along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Tigris River Euphrates River

Babylon (an empire in early Mesopotamia) developed the Code of Hammurabi, which was the first recording of laws for all to see.

Early Chinese civilization began as a result of its location along the Yellow (or Huang He) and Yangtze Rivers. Yellow River Yangzte River

Early China was the first to develop written Chinese and set up a dynasty to rule China. Xia Dynasty

Early Indian civilization began as a result of its location along the Indus River.
