THE RISE OF THE KKK Formed in 1866 Lynching and scare tactics Civil War notes THE RISE OF THE KKK Formed in 1866 Why 1866? Lynching and scare tactics States in the South started shifting back to Democratic control - the KKK formed to put fear into freedmen in the south - lots of lynching and scare tactics - slowly, all states started shifting from Republican control to the Democratic party. Due to job restrictions, most slaves ended up farming again. that leads into sharecropping

Kuklos – a Greek word meaning “inner circle” RISE OF THE Ku Klux Klan Kuklos – a Greek word meaning “inner circle”

KKK: UNIFORM http://www. motherjones X in the middle – sometimes a cross. With a drop of blood in the middle to represent “Jesus’ crucifixion and the blood he shed for the white Aryan race” whom they see as “God’s chosen people” ***WE WILL TALK *AT.LENGTH.* ABOUT THE KKK IN OUR CIVIL RIGHTS UNIT. With a partner, discuss the purpose of their uniform. It was intentionally chosen to look like this!

KKK: Continuities and changes over time With a partner, predict – What about the KKK has stayed the same since they began? (think: appearance, values, etc) What has changed? Kk – kuklos means inner circle – so that you can

LYNCHING Quick discussion: Does lynching serve a specific purpose? Is it different than ‘regular’ murder? How so? *Lynching = hanging

Civil War notes LYNCHING According to the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People): there must be evidence that someone was killed; the killing must have occurred illegally; three or more persons must have taken part in the killing; and the killers must have claimed to be serving justice or tradition. NAACP: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

LYNCHING Became a popular way or resolving some of the anger that whites had in relation to the free blacks If they thought a black violated a Jim Crow law, rather than take them to court, they’d beat him/her up and lynch him/her Another way to show white power/control over blacks

LYNCHING From 1882-1968, 4,743 lynchings occurred 3,446 were black Not all of the lynchings were ever recorded (for obvious reasons) 3,446 were black 1,297 were white Many of the whites lynched were lynched for helping the black or being anti-lynching

BILLIE HOLIDAY – “STRANGE FRUIT” Civil War notes BILLIE HOLIDAY – “STRANGE FRUIT” Southern trees bear strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees Pastoral scene of the gallant south The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh Then the sudden smell of burning flesh Here is fruit for the crows to pluck For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop NAACP: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

CLOSURE Thoughtfully respond to both of the following questions: What surprised you about todays activity? Why is the study of civil rights still relevant today?
