DENSITY & BUOYANCY. BUOYANCY BUOYANCY = the ability to float in a fluid. Examples of fluids = water, air BUOYANT FORCE = the upward force that acts on.
What is the relationship between buoyancy and the weight of displaced water? Archimedes’ Principle states that buoyancy is equal to the weight of the water.

Upthrust and Gravity

Upthrust and Gravity Gravity is the pull of the earth on something Upthrust is the push upwards of a liquid on something.

Liquid Weight in Air (N) Weight in Liquid (N)

Practical Measure the weight of an object in the air using a Newton meter. Write down the weight in the table. Now put the object into the water and measure its weight. Write down the weight in the table.

Objects weigh less in water because the water pushes the object upwards. This force is called ______________ When __________ and ___________ are equal, the object will FLOAT. UPTHRUST UPTHRUST GRAVITY

When gravity is bigger than upthrust, the object will _____ If upthrust is bigger than gravity, the object will move upwards, out of the water. SINK
