Solving 1- & 2-step equations Unit 2

Warm Ups Write an expression for each phrase. 1. 3 times the quantity m minus 7 2. -4 times the quantity 4 plus w 3. Twice the quantity b plus 9 4. The product of -11 and the quantity n minus 8 5. 2 times the quantity 3 times c plus 9 6. The quantity 3 plus r times the quantity r minus 7

Think-Pair-Share What does it mean to be equal? Think about this on your own for a moment Pair up with a partner and discuss Share with the class round-robin

Equal means “the same”? So are these equal? Define again…what does equal mean?

Equal means “same number”? So are these equal? How should we define equal?

Equality means same value! Not looks the same Not has the same number Not simply has = Equality means same value!

Solving Equations Goal: The goal when solving equations is to isolate the variable on one side. We do this by using inverse operations. What are inverse operations? Multiplication  Division Subtraction  Addition

Golden Rule of Solving Whatever you do to one side of the equation, you do the exact same thing to the other side of the equation. Why do we have to follow this rule?

Let’s solve some equations! 2n – 5 = 7 -7 = -c – 29 m/8 + 4 = 16 3.5 + 10m = 7.32
