Warm Up

Violence - the threatened or actual use of physical force or power to harm another person or to damage property.

Causes of Violence Uncontrolled anger or frustration A need to control others Hatred or prejudice against a particular group Retaliation or revenge for some past harm, whether real or perceived. GANGS Alcohol and Drug use Mental & Emotional Problems Availability of weapons

Violence in the Media… Violent words and images in television, movies, song lyrics, video games, etc. Can make a person more violent toward others

Seeing and experiencing violence… can make a person insensitive to others who are hurt or in trouble

Assault and Homicide Assault is an unlawful physical attack or threat of attack. Random violence is violence committed for no particular reason. Homicide is the willful killing of one human being by another.

Sexual Violence any form of unwelcome sexual contact directed at an individual. Includes: Sexual assault – intentional sexual attack against another person. Rape – any form of sexual intercourse that takes place against a person’s will

Sexual Harassment any unwanted remark, behavior, or touch that has sexual content. If the behavior makes any environment intimidating, hostile or offensive, it is sexual harassment.

Hate Crime -crime motivated by hatred or prejudice of another group Hate Crime -crime motivated by hatred or prejudice of another group. Hate crimes can take many forms: Harassment Vandalism Arson Assault and Homicide

Group Activity In groups of 2-3: Complete the Media Violence Activity Sheet. Turn in ONE paper per group (make sure all group member names are listed)

Independent Activity Nicholas is the only freshman in a senior-level class. He’s younger and smaller than most of the other students, and some of the older guys give him a hard time. After class, they stop by his locker and shove him around or throw his books and papers on the floor. Lately, Nicholas wakes up in the morning dreading going to school. He wants to report them to the principal, but he’s afraid that will cause the boys to react even more violently. What should Nicholas do?

Step 1: State the situation (what decision is Nicholas trying to make?) Step 2: List the options (what are his choices? List two) Step 3: Weight the possible outcomes (what might happen if Nicholas acted on each option you listed for Step 2?) Step 4: Consider Values (If you were Nicholas in this situation, what values would guide your decision? Describe how your values related to each option.) Step 5: Make a Decision and Act on it (what decision would you make if you were in Nick’s position?) Step 6: Evaluate the Decision (How do you know if you made a good choice or not?)
