Ecology How does pollution impact our environment?

Pollution Pollution: addition of substances to the environment that make it undesirable or unfit for life The substances that cause pollution are called pollutants

Air Pollution Mainly from incomplete burning of fossil fuels e.g. coal, oil, and wood May be due to Human Activities Exhaust from motor vehicles Factories Burning of garbage Use of CFCs in foam packaging Natural occurrences Biological decay Forest fires Volcanic eruptions  All three release ammonia into the air Results: Increase in disease – decrease in health

Acid Rain Cause: Burning of fossil fuels releases toxin into the atmosphere Effects: Can destroy forests, poison lakes, kill wildlife, erode statues and buildings

Acid Rain Effects of Acid Rain: Dissolves aluminum salts in soils and washes them into rivers and lakes Death of fish in lakes and rivers because of high salt concentration/acidity

Effects of Acid Rain

Greenhouse effect Cause: Effects: Burning of fossil fuels and losing forests increases the amount of gases in the atmosphere that trap heat Effects: Changes in climate, melting of polar ice caps, drought, flooding

Ozone Depletion Cause: Use of certain chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) Non-toxic unreactive chemicals Used as: Aerosol propellants Cooling agents (fridge and air conditioning) Foam packaging Results: Break down the ozone layer allowing more UV rays to penetrate Earth Increase risk of skin cancer

Soil Degredation Causes: Effects: Soil erosion and pesticides threaten quantity and quality Effects: Threats to agriculture and organisms that live in the soil Bioaccumulation of pesticides to higher trophic levels

Habitat Destruction Causes: Effects: Poisoning lakes and destroying forests and other areas for wood, homes, etc. Deforestation – removal of all the trees in a forest for lumber, farms, mines and urbanization Effects: Threatens species living there, upsets the balance of nature (carbon cycle)

Water Pollution Causes: Effects: Waste, trash, chemicals etc. contaminate rivers, lakes, oceans Effects: Threat to species that live in water, less clean water for drinking, farming, etc.
