Be All You Can Be Lesson Twelve MAN UP BIBLE SERIES Be All You Can Be Lesson Twelve

The Real World This Bible Study is about Giving. I know this is not a popular subject but it is one that we need to look at. Being rich is not all it is cracked up to be. Look at the Christians in the United States today. Are we any happier than they were 2,000 years ago? Does money and wealth really bring the happiness and security that we all long for? I want to share with you a better way that is taught in God’s Word. The Grace of Giving! We will look at 2 Corinthians in this study and find the secret to giving with a joyful heart. Tithing is not a new concept. We find the nation of Israel was called to give to God. Leviticus 27:30 says; “A tithe of everything.” This was given without question and was given as a sign of trust and respect to the Lord as it was all His in the beginning. Keep an open mind and wallet as we dig into this topic.

The Real Word 2 Corinthians 8 New International Version (NIV) The Collection for the Lord’s People 8 And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2 In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. 5 And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. 6 So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. 7 But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you[a]—see that you also excel in this grace of giving. 8 I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. 10 And here is my judgment about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have. 13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15 as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”[b]

Real Talk What can we do to escape the power of materialism? Do you tithe? ( give 10 percent of your income) Why or why not? Is there a difference between giving because you have to or want to?

Real Steps What does 2 Corinthians 8 teach us about Grace Giving: The Poorest in America are still in the top 1% of the World. Grace Giving is not about being rich. It is about love. Grace Giving is about willingness. Not have to rather want to. Once God has your heart you must give him your wallet. Do not store things on earth. (Matt.6:19&20) Lay up treasures in heaven. Spend money on eternal things. Give because God asks you to. Give because God blesses those who do. Give in a disciplined manner. Weekly or at least monthly.

Time to Close Grace Giving goes beyond a mere tithe. It hits at the heart of the matter. Who do we love God or Money? You cannot serve both. CS Lewis writes: “ If our expenditures on comforts, luxuries, amusements is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do but cannot because our charitable giving excludes them.” You may have reached a place in your Christian experience where you feel no more growth. You attend the Corps and participate. You read your Bible and pray. Yet something is missing. Start grace giving and see if the flood gates of heaven open and pour out blessings you never thought would come. Time to MAN UP!
