OZONE Monitoring Network 2016 Annual AQ Monitoring Meeting Tom Downs, CCM Chief Meteorologist tom.downs@maine.gov MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Protecting Maine’s Air, Land and Water

OZONE STANDARD REVISIONS Effective December 26, 2015 70 ppb for both the primary and secondary 8-hour Ozone NAAQS – with new AQI breakpoints (55-70 ppb = Moderate) Final Attainment/nonattainment Designations will use 2014-16 data. Changes to data handling conventions Only looks at 17 of 24 possible 8-hr running averages to eliminate “double counting” of exceedances (could miss some exceedances) For days with less than 75% data recovery rates (< 13 instead of 17 valid 8-hr averages) the daily maximum 8-hr concentration is valid if it’s greater than the NAAQS. MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION www.maine.gov/dep Threshold = what 2016 4th highest 8-hour daily maximum ozone concentration will cause an area in Maine to be designated nonattainment. Latest year to reach the threshold: Cadillac Mt – 2007 Cape Elizabeth – 2007 Kennebunkport – 2002 Port Clyde – 2002 McFarland Hill – 2002 Gardiner - 1988 All others – threshold never reached October 2016 – State recommended attainment/nonattainment designations due to EPA October 2017 - Final designations using 2014-16 data.
