Scientific Notation IPC

Scientific Notation A method used to condense a number Example: 1.83 x 104 Only one number in front of the decimal (1-9)

Writing Scientific Notation Move the decimal so there is only one number to the left Count the number of places as you move If you move the decimal LEFT the exponent is POSITIVE If you move the decimal to the RIGHT the exponent is NEGATIVE

Check Your Work! If the original number is greater than 1 the exponent is POSITIVE If the original number is less than 1 the exponent is NEGATIVE

Examples 3,600,000 = ? Answer: 3.6 x 106 .0082 = ? Answer: 8.2 x 10-3

Converting Back to Normal Do the opposite… If the power of 10 is POSITIVE – move the decimal to the RIGHT. If the power of 10 is NEGARIVE – move the decimal to the LEFT

Examples 4.01 x 102 = ? Answer: 401 5.7 x 10-3 = ? Answer: 0.0057
