The Sun – Earth - Moon System
Standard S6E2b. Explain the alignment of the earth, moon, and sun during solar and lunar eclipses.
Solar and Lunar Eclipses
Solar Eclipse. Here is an animation showing a total solar eclipse Remember that it is not safe to stare at a solar eclipse !!!
Eclipses When the moon’s shadow hits Earth or Earth’s shadow hits the moon, an eclipse occurs. There are 2 types of eclipses: solar (sun) eclipse & lunar.
 When the moon’s shadow hits the Earth or when the Earth’s shadow hits the moon an eclipse occurs.
Eclipses What is the length of time from a new moon to the next new moon? 29.5 Earth days Moon rotates and revolves around the Earth every 27.3 days.
Solar and Lunar Eclipses. What is an eclipse? An eclipse occurs any time something passes in front of the Sun, blocking its light. This can be the Earth.
What is an eclipse? An eclipse occurs any time something passes in front of the Sun, blocking its light. This can be the Earth or the Moon.
Eclipses. The Sun and Moon occasionally line up so that we have an eclipse. Revolution of the moon causes eclipses. An eclipse is defined as an astronomical.
The Moon. The effects of the Moon Phases of the moon Eclipses Tides.
Eclipses 2 main types
Eclipse One way the Moon affects the Earth. Eclipse As the Moon and the Earth are moving through space, they sometimes block each other from the Sun’s.
Eclipses 2 main types
Lunar Eclipse When the Moon is in Earth’s Shadow.
Eclipses. SOLAR ECLIPSES Solar Eclipse- caused by the moon making a small shadow on the Earth. –Moon crosses in front of the sun. –Moon is in a new moon.
Sun, Moon, Earth, How do they work together to help life survive? Eclipses.
Eclipses Eclipse of the Sun Eclipse of the Moon. Solar Eclipse or Eclipse of the sun When this happens, the sun seems to disappear during the day. It.
Eclipses. -An amazing cosmic coincidence! When viewed from the surface of Earth, both the moon and sun appear to be about the same size. - A solar eclipse.
Eclipses when the Earth or the Moon casts a shadow on the other.
Eclipses By Reagan and Ben. Solar eclipse A total solar eclipse can only occur when the Moon is in its knew phase. At this time the Moon.

Eclipses. Two Types – Solar Eclipse – Lunar Eclipse Solar Eclipse – The moon blocks the earth’s view of the sun. Lunar Eclipse – The earth blocks the.
Eclipses. Solar Eclipse A solar eclipse happens when the moon blocks the light from the Sun from reaching the Earth People who live in the umbra of the.
Shadows. Shadows- areas light cannot reach due to an opaque object in light’s path. There are two parts to a shadow. Umbra- sharp black center of a shadow.
The Moon. What do we already know about the Moon?
Solar and Lunar Eclipses. What is an eclipse? An eclipse occurs any time something passes in front of the Sun, blocking its light. This can be the Earth.
Solar and Lunar Eclipses. CO: I can explain why solar and lunar eclipses occur. Notes are in the yellow. You will want to draw pictures to help yourself.
I can explain what causes a lunar eclipse. I can make a diagram of what a lunar eclipse looks like. I can persevere in order to understand a natural phenomenon.
Eclipses. What is an eclipse? The partial or total blocking of one object in space by another When the moon or Earth casts a shadow on the other It can.
Solar Eclipses Solar Eclipse – Moon passes directly in front of the sun.
Lunar & Solar Eclipses. The moon's orbit around Earth is slightly tilted with respect to the orbit around the sun. As a result, the moon travels above.
Phases, Eclipses, and Tides Chapter Motions of the Moon As the moon moves, the positions of the moon, Earth, and the sun change in relation to each.
Eclipses. Shadows Note the shadow differences with a small light source vs. a large light source.
Main IdeaDetails Eclipses. Eclipse- When the moon’s shadow hits Earth -or- the Earth’s shadow hits the moon.
 Occur when the moon’s shadow hits Earth or Earth’s shadow hits the moon.  Only occurs when the Earth, moon, and sun are lined up exactly.

Shadows The evenly dark part of a shadow is called the umbra. Umbra means 'shade' in Latin. The fuzzy part between the dark and the light is called the penumbra. Pene means 'almost' in Latin.

If one is in the umbra of an object, the light source is completely obscured. If one is in the penumbra, the source is only partially obscured, to a greater or lesser degree as one moves through the penumbra.

Early in history it was understood that eclipses of the Sun and the Moon are related to the shadows of the Moon and the Earth. During an eclipse of the Sun, the shadow of the Moon sweeps across the Earth. We see the Sun blocked by the Moon. During an eclipse of the Moon, the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow. Here is a diagram of what the shadow of a planet in space looks like.

People who are in the umbra shadow, experience a total solar eclipse People who are in the umbra shadow, experience a total solar eclipse. People who are in the penumbra experience a partial solar eclipse.

NASA - Eclipses During 2012 The next time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the northeastern U.S. is 2017!
