Presentation transcript:

Apostrophe Aim: explore the correct use of the apostrophe for omission and possession.

Apostrophies This is an apostrophe ’ It has two uses, omission and possession.

Apostrophes for possession Think about the word possession. If you possess something you own it. These apostrophes show the reader that someone owns something. Look at the example : The dog’s paw was swollen. The ’ tells us that the paw belongs to the dog.

Apostrophes for omission When two words have been pushed together and letters have been taken out, an apostrophe is used. It is placed where the missing letters would be, look at the examples: That’s the ticket! I can’t believe it

Now it’s your turn! Can you think of two sentences that show an apostrophe being used to show possession? Can you think of two sentences that show an apostrophe being used to show omission?

Add the apostrophes! Copy out the following sentences and add in the apostrophes. Write a P after possessive apostrophes, and O after sentences using the apostrophe for omission. The milkmans van was green and white. The housewife couldnt believe her eyes. Its a beautiful day. Theyd love to come. I cant hear properly. I just wont do it. Joes house was huge. The schools mascot had been stolen.

Extension Make a list of song titles, or lyrics that use apostrophes, e.g, I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas, or Don’t Go Breaking my Heart.
