What is CERCLA? Also known as Superfund, CERCLA was enacted by Congress in 1980 Amended in 1986 and 1990 A federal (national) program The EPA established the Superfund Task Force in 2017 to improve site cleanups and promote redevelopment Passed in response to dangerous hazardous waste practices and management in the 70s Like with the Love Canal
What does CERCLA do? Clean up and liability law Enforced a tax on chemical/petroleum industries Provides federal authority to hold companies liable for the disposal of hazardous wastes that could damage the environment and people Taxes are put into a trust fund for cleaning up uncontrolled/abandoned waste sites Law authorizes short-term removals and long-term remedial response actions Supports the regulation of the RCRA
