Solving Multi-Step Equations

Review: Distribute Multiply whatever is in front of the parentheses by whatever is inside the parentheses. Example: 5(3x – 10) Answer: 15x - 50

Review: Like Terms Like Terms: terms with the same variables (letter) raised to the same exponents. w 7 Like Terms Unlike Terms 5 and 1.8 3x and 2x w and 3.2 and n 6a and 6b 5x2 and 2x The exponents are different The variables are different Only one term contains a variable

How to solve Multi-Step Equations Distribute. Bonus Step: Multiple by reciprocal/LCM, if fractions. Combine Like Terms (ONLY on same side of equal sign). Use the inverse operation to move numbers to the right. Use the inverse operation to move variables to the left. Divide.

Example 3(4x – 10) = 26

Example 6(4 + 3x) - 10x = 30 - 2x

Let’s Practice… 4(5 + 2x) + 7x = -5 2. 1 5 x – 8 = 4 + 2x 3.
