Path to independence

John Locke John Locke, a political philosopher, wrote that all people were born with natural rights, including the right to life, liberty, and property. Locke believed that power comes from the consent of the governed. A social contract. Locke’s ideas of Natural Rights will be embedded (placed) in Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence.

Thomas Paine

Declaration of independence Thomas Jefferson was the main author of the Declaration of Independence. He used the ideas of John Locke and Thomas Paine. The Declaration is a list of grievances (complaints) against the King of England.

Who Am I? John Hancock "There, I guess King George will be able to read that without his spectacles."

Who Am I? Benjamin Franklin ”In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

Who Am I? George Washington “It is better to be alone than in bad company.”

Who Am I? John Jay "America belongs to "We the People." It does not belong to the Congress. It does not belong to special interest groups. It does not belong to the Courts. It belongs to "We the People.."

American Revolution

Causes Between 1689 and 1763, the British and French fought a series of costly wars. The British Parliament wanted the colonists to pay new taxes to help the empire. The colonists resisted the taxes.

Effects War broke out between the colonies and the British in 1775, at Concord, Massachusetts. The war continued until the American colonists under the command of George Washington finally defeated the British at Yorktown in 1781. In 1783, Great Britain (England) gave the United States the recognition of independence under The Treaty of Paris.
