ESL Exit 2017 Spring Semester

Management The ESL Exit is an opportunity for you to show what you can do. Specifically the ESL Exit is an opportunity for you to show that you can manage your thought, that you can manage the time, that you can manage the language. Use your skills to make the ESL Exit work for you.

Manage the thought (1) Do you have enough thought? Can you meet the target length? (3.5 pages) Do you have too much thought? Choose just what you need and leave the rest for another time.

Manage the thought (2) Do you address the topic directly? Have you used the structure of the topic to formulate your response? Can you see the overall content of your paper before you begin to write?

Manage the thought (3) Opening paragraph This is your opportunity to make a first impression. Do you state your position clearly in the opening paragraph? So, by the end of the opening paragraph, does the reader have a clear idea where the writing is going? If the reader does, then you do as well. If the reader does not, then… Have you made a good first impression?

Manage the thought (4) Do you present your thought in a logical manner that makes it easy for the reader to follow? Does each paragraph have a clear focus that contributes directly to your overall message? Does each sentence logically follow the one before it? Do you connect each point you make back to the topic? If you do not, how can you be sure that the reader will?

Manage the thought (5) Closing paragraph Does the closing paragraph of the writing refer back to where the writing begins and add something new? This is your last chance to communicate something to the reader. Does it benefit you?

Manage the time Do you manage the time for your benefit? Before you begin to write, do you take a few minutes to plan what you intend to write? Do you manage the time well enough… to allow yourself to complete the essay? so that you have a few minutes to read through the paper and see whether you need to change anything?

Manage the language (1) Is each sentence that looks like a complete sentence actually a grammatically complete sentence? Does each sentence begin and end as it should? Do you use upper case and lower case letters consistently according to the rules of written English? Does each paragraph begin and end as it should? Do you end all questions appropriately? Have you kept the time references consistent to convey your message with little or no confusion?

Manage the language (2) Do you realize that "i" is not a word in English? Do you realize that "english" is not the proper spelling of "English"? Do you know the difference between "lose" and loose"? Can you distinguish "quiet" from "quite"? Do you realize that "cannot" is actually one word in English? Do you know the difference between "united state" and "the United States"?

Manage the language (3) Do you use what you know to your advantage? Do you focus on using language that you are confident you are sure of and minimize the use of language that you are unsure of?

Management The ESL Exit is an opportunity for you to show what you can do. So use the ESL Exit to show… that you can manage your thought, that you can manage the time, that you can manage the language. Make the ESL Exit an opportunity that benefits you.
