Overview A1-A2 In this lesson you will write a profile of a classmate and explore types of errors students often make. You’ll work on these areas of language. Pronunciation-word stress in compound nouns Lexis-personal information Constructions-SVO statements Sentence grammar- wh- questions (present tense markings) Discourse-linking words -and, but, also Functions-find out personal details Speaking-ask and answer questions Listening-listen for specific details Reading-use notes as an aid to speaking Writing-taking useful notes You’ll focus on these skills today. After completing this lesson, you should be able to:

Objectives Ask for personal information and make notes of the answers people give you. Write a personal profile using your notes. Identify types of errors you can make in your writing. Understand the symbols in a correction code your teacher will use for your written work.

Writing A personal profile Write a profile of your partner. Use the profile of a teacher to help you. Work with a partner. Interview each other. Take notes. Zifan Yang, 15 from Shenzen, China mountains-loves technology-likes Give your teacher your profiles. My partner, her name is Zifan Yang. She’s Chinese. She come from the Shenzan in the China, where she live there with her mother and father. She has fifteen and an only child. Her father’s name, it is Chaoxiang and her mother she is Ju. They both teechers at scool in city centre. She like very much play computer game and the shopping too. But she love mountain also. She don’t like TV. Her favorite color is green. Green is color of mountain. She want to be IT engineer in the future. Use these questions to help you. What’s your full name? Ask more questions if you can. Where are you from? Where do you live? Examples Who do you live with? What are their names? What do your parents do? What do you like doing in your free time? What else do you like doing? Work as a class. Find as many errors as you can in the profile. What about something you don’t like? What’s your favorite color? Why do you like it? What about the future?

Learning from your errors Make sure you keep them in a useful place. Writing Correction code Sentences 1-10 each have one error in them. Work in teams. Find the errors. Write the sentences again. ABOUT LANGUAGE Learning from your errors Everyone makes errors! Your errors are an essential part of your learning. For example, this sentence has three types of error which are useful for the student to know. She come from the Shenzan. The first is a grammar error. ‘She’ means the verb ‘come’ needs an ‘s’. The second is also a grammar error, but this time of a different type. ‘Shenzan’ is the name of a city. These are not usually marked with an article. The third is a spelling error. Shenzhen is spelt with an ‘e’ not an ‘a’. It also has an ‘h’. I play bingo right now. He’s from the Hong Kong. I like very much football. He’s from china I am an English estudant. Her name Tanya. Is of the Russia my brother. She like the color blue. My teacher’s name’s James. Her school is on the city centre. Work as a class. Match a description from a-j with each of 1-10. Interview another person and write a profile of this person. Give your written work to your teacher. Use the symbols on your work and think about how you could change things. Keep an ongoing record of errors you often make.
