Elements of a Mystery

Characters Just like other stories, mysteries have characters. Suspects are characters who may have caused the problem the mystery is trying to solve. Detectives try to solve the mystery.

Setting The location where the mystery takes place. When the story takes place.

Plot The storyline telling what the mystery is about. Most mystery plots use suspense. This means that the reader does not know the solution while reading the mystery,

Clues Clues are hints that help the detectives and reader solve the mystery. They can be things people say or do or objects that are found.

Red Herrings Red herrings are distractions. Distractions are things that lead a detective off the path and make the search longer.

Story Structure Story structure is the way a story is set up. INTRODUCTION: Beginning-learn about the problem and meet the characters. BODY OF STORY: Middle-someone is working to solve the mystery. CONCLUSION: End-mystery is solved.
