I. Introduction A. Introduction Cells are organized into layers or groups of similar cells with a common function called tissues. 2. Intercellular junctions connect cell membranes.

I. Introduction A. Introduction Three types of intercellular junctions are tight junctions, desmosomes, and gap junctions. Tight junctions are located in cells that form sheet like layers. 5. Tight junctions function to close spaces between cells.

Gap junctions function to link the cytoplasm of adjacent cells and allow ions, nutrients, and other small molecules to move between them. 10. Stratified squamous epithelium that does not accumulate keratin is located lining the oral cavity, esophagus, vagina, and anal canal.
