FoAA Slope of a line

What is the meaning of this sign? Icy Road Ahead Steep Road Ahead Curvy Road Ahead Trucks Entering Highway Ahead

What does the 7% mean? So, what is the meaning of slope??? 7% is the slope of the road. It means the road rises 7 feet vertically for every 100 feet horizontally. 7 feet 100 feet So, what is the meaning of slope??? Slope is the steepness of a line.

1) Determine the slope (rate of change) of the line. When given the graph, it is easier to apply “rise over run”. Or

Find the change by counting on a graph.

Find the slope of each line below.

A line has a positive slope if it is going uphill from left to right. Slope can be expressed different ways: ****Slope is the same as rate of change**** A line has a positive slope if it is going uphill from left to right. A line has a negative slope if it is going downhill from left to right.

When given points, it is easier to use the formula! 2) Find the slope (rate of change) of the line that passes through the points (-2, -2) and (4, 1). When given points, it is easier to use the formula!

Find the slope (rate of change) of the line that passes through (3, 5) and (-1, 4).

You try! Find the slope of the line that goes through the points (-5, 3) and (2, 1).

What is the slope of a horizontal line? Mr. H0y The line doesn’t rise! All horizontal lines have a slope of 0.

What is the slope of a vertical line? Mr. VUx The line doesn’t run! All vertical lines have an undefined slope.

Mr. VUx and Mr. H0y VUx: Vertical lines have undefined slope with an equation x = a number. HOy: Horizontal lines have zero as their slope with an equation y = a number.

Warm Up – Day 6 What is a direct variation? List 3 ways in which you can tell if something represents direct variation. What is slope? List 4 different definitions or ways to find slope. Which method of calculating direct variation do you prefer? Why? Which method of finding slope do you prefer? Why? Which slope is steeper, -7/2 or 3/7? How do you know?

Warm Up – Day 7 Suppose y varies directly with x. Find the constant of variation if y = 3 when x = -2. Determine whether y varies directly as x. If it does, find the constant of variation. y + 4x = 0. Write an equation of a direct variation that goes through the point (-5, 90). Suppose y varies directly with x. If y = -4 when x = ½, find y when x = 2/3. A 15-minute long-distance telephone call costs $.90.The cost varies directly as the length of the call. Write an equation that relates the cost to the length of the call. How long is a call that costs $1.32?

Draw a line through the point (2,0) that has a slope of 3. 1. Graph the ordered pair (2, 0). 2. From (2, 0), apply rise over run (write 3 as a fraction). 3. Plot a point at this location. 4. Draw a straight line through the points.
