Contrast ethnocentric, polycentric, and geocentric attitudes toward global business Discuss the importance of regional trading alliances and global trade mechanisms Describe the structures and techniques organizations use as they go international Explain the relevance of the political/legal, economic, and cultural environments to global business

A Manager’s Global Perspective Parochialism - viewing the world solely through your own perspectives, leading to an inability to recognize differences between people. Ethnocentric Attitude - the parochialistic belief that the best work approaches and practices are those of the home country

A Manager’s Global Perspective Polycentric Attitude - the view that the managers in the host country know the best work approaches and practices for running their business. Geocentric Attitude - a world-oriented view that focuses on using the best approaches and people from around the globe.

Identify the Approaches

Who are They???

Trading Alliances European Union (EU) - a union of 27 European nations created as a unified economic and trade entity. Their main motive was to regain their economic position against USA and Japan. Euro - a single common European currency.

Trading Alliances (cont.) Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)- a trading alliance of 10 Southeast Asian nations namely- Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. 1 Observer – Papua New Guinea. North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) - an agreement among the Mexican, Canadian, and U.S. governments in which certain barriers to trade have been eliminated. South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)- composed of eight member states (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, the Maldives, and Afghanistan) began eliminating tariffs in 2006. Its aim, like all the other regional trading alliances, is to allow free flow of goods and services.

Who are They???

Global Trade Mechanism World Trade Organization (WTO) - a global organization of 153 countries that deals with the rules of trade among nations. Evolving from General Agreements on Tariffs and Trade. Dealing with trade rules of nations 153 member countries Consisting of 30 observer governments. International Monetary Fund (IMF) - an organization of 185 countries that promotes international monetary cooperation and provides advice, loans, and technical assistance.

Global Trade Mechanism (cont.) World Bank Group - a group of five closely associated institutions that provides financial and technical assistance to developing countries. Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) - an international economic organization that helps its 30 member countries achieve sustainable economic growth and employment.

Types of International Organization

Types of International Organization (cont.) Multinational Corporation (MNC) - a broad term that refers to any and all types of international companies that maintain operations in multiple countries. Multidomestic Corporation - an MNC that decentralizes management and other decisions to the local country.

Types of International Organization (cont.) Global Company - an MNC that centralizes management and other decisions in the home country. Transnational or Borderless Organization - an MNC in which artificial geographical barriers are eliminated.

Types of International Organization (cont.)

Application of Multi-domestic Strategy According to Hofstede (2001), Japan has a high desire for stability and tries to avoid uncertainty as it is ranked on 6th place. Due to this, we can assume that customers are more open towards familiar flavors. The adaption of local flavors in this way is unique for Japan and non-existent in other countries, in which KitKat is available (Madden, 2010).

Going Global Global Sourcing - Purchasing materials or labor from around the world wherever it is cheapest. Exporting - Making products domestically and selling them abroad.

Going Global (cont.) Licensing: When an organization gives a right to another organization, to make and sell its product, using the licensor's production technology and specifications. (Ex- Abdul Monem and Pran, licensee of Coca-Cola in Bangladesh) Franchising: An organization gives another organization to use its name and other operating methods. ( Example; Transcom Foods, franchisee for KFC and Pizza Hut in Bangladesh).

Going Global (cont.) Strategic Alliance - a partnership between an organization and one or more foreign company partner(s) in which both share resources and knowledge in developing new products or building production facilities. Joint Venture - a specific type of strategic alliance in which the partners agree to form a separate, independent organization for some business purpose. Ex- Cherry Jaguar Land Rover, Nokia and Siemens, Sony Ericcsson

Going Global (cont.) Foreign Subsidiary - directly investing in a foreign country by setting up a separate and independent production facility or office.

The Economic Enviroment ‘17,000 tons of Parmesan cheese, with an estimated value of $187 million, are being held in the vaults of the Italian bank Credito Emiliano. The cheese is collateral from Italian cheese makers struggling through the recession’ Free Market Economy - an economic system in which resources are primarily owned and controlled by the private sector. Planned Economy - an economic system in which economic decisions are planned by a central government.

Cultural Environment National Culture - the values and attitudes shared by individuals from a specific country that shape their behavior and beliefs about what is important. Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) program - a research program that studies cross-cultural leadership behaviors.

Globe’s Cultural Dimension AbU

Impact of Culture on Business It is a Japanese tradition of sending good luck messages to university and school students before the examination periods. This is the culture which Nestlé Japan has taken advantage of and made it an opportunity to promote KitKat. As KitKat partnered with the Japanese Postal Services, they created a new packaging for KitKat which could have been posted. Here people can write their message on the packaging and sent it to the person who they want to wish luck, along with a mail stamp. Moreover, many of the post offices are decorated in KitKat themes. This promotional activity has enabled KitKat to get an addition of 20,000 distributors. The most beneficial part of this activity is that it is free from other company’s competition as these channels are only used by KitKat. Additionally, this gave the company a benefit of $11 million free media exposure.

Tackling Cultural Diversity Cultural Intelligence - cultural awareness and sensitivity skills. Global Mind-Set - attributes that allow a leader to be effective in cross-cultural environments.
