English Language GCSE Reassurance – Results at St Alban’s The number of students achieving a C or above has been among the highest in 4 counties for 3 years. (Torfaen, Monmouthshire, Newport and Blaenau Gwent) 2016 & 2017 77% and 83% A*-C We work extremely hard for our students.

Why is English Language so important? Colleges require a C for apprenticeships Certain careers require even a B (e.g. teaching) Employers consider it a good indication of a person’s literacy and communication skills Future employers look for students who have English and Maths at C or above Life skills – let’s make your children confident readers, writer and Speakers!

How can I help at home? Clear correlation PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT - Skills-based LIMIT MOBILE PHONES /social media (get support from parent groups) ENCOURAGE READING: Times, Independent, Guardian. Talk about articles you have read. TALKING – ask their opinion on news issues WRITING – ask them to read out what they have written. Encourage them to check spelling etc. GROWTH MINDSET - DON’T WORRY if you’re not sure – find out with them – show them it’s ok to be unsure! Be positive but BE CRUEL TO BE KIND. Ensure they have an opportunity to do it somewhere quiet.
