Supervised Pastoral Education (SPE) is an experience-based approach to learning ministry, which combines pastoral care with qualified supervision and group reflection. The program is open to clergy, theology students and lay persons with theology training. It aims to assist persons in achieving their full potential for ministry. Programs are offered at facilities throughout Canada, including general and psychiatric hospitals, correctional centres and a variety of other locations. Each centre is connected to a theological college. Teaching supervisors are certified by the The Canadian Association for Spiritual Care.

SPE is normally in an inter-disciplinary context where the insights of other professions promote creative dialogue and where co-operation is encouraged with other workers and agencies serving the community.

What are the essentials of a SPE Program? Pastoral ministry with others who may or may not be in a crisis situation. The frequency and intensity of visits depends on factors unique to each situation. Reflective consideration of pastoral encounters facilitated by reports (written or taped), role playing, seminars, and discussion with peers and a supervisor.

This reflective process considers the dynamics of the one being ministered to as well as the one ministering from theological, psychological, and sociological perspectives. A group process in which SPE students and their supervisor share and learn together. Individual supervision for each student with their supervisor.

An opportunity to acquire relevant theoretical information through an educational process including directed reading. Clinical seminars are integrated with the education.

Membership Categories Associate Member: An Associate Member is any person who wishes to support CASC and receive the benefits of membership. Associate Members range from those having no CPE or PCE training to those having multiple Advanced Units. Student Member person enrolled in a basic Supervised Pastoral Education (SPE) unit. Certified Member: A Certified Member is a CASC Specialist or Teaching Supervisor.

During summer months, students are usually involved for eight hours a day, five days a week over 12 weeks. During fall and winter months, students are offered programs on a one or two-day-per-week basis. Courses are offered at Basic and Advanced levels in supervisory and specialist streams.

SPE (Supervised Pastoral Education) consists of 2 different streams: Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Pastoral Counseling Education (PCE)

CPE is a fully integrated practical and theoretical experience conducted in units, each totalling a minimum of 400 hours. CPE provides training for spiritual care in such places as parishes, health institutions and correctional facilities.

PCE prepares one for counselling in a pastoral counselling centre, multi-staff parish setting or private practice. Students may choose to undertake Pastoral Counselling Education in one of two distinct formats, unit based and course based.

EDUCATION LEVELS In both the CPE and PCE streams, education is offered at the following levels: Basic Advanced Provisional Supervisor Associate Supervisor

Academic Requirements The following is necessary for certification with CASC/ACSS: official transcripts, diplomas or other evidence of completion of a qualifying 2 year graduate/masters degree in theology or a clinical related field, from an educational institution accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) or Council for Higher Education Accreditation

CERTIFICATION Specialist Certification may be applied for following the successful completion of 2 Basic Units and 2 Advanced Units.
