Love’s only weakness is also its greatest strength: it defies reason. Love and Poetry Read the brief poem below and discuss with your group the answers to the following questions: What is this saying about love? What type of love is this referring to? How does this apply to the play? Love’s only weakness is also its greatest strength: it defies reason.

Love and Poetry Love’s only weakness is also its greatest strength: it defies reason. A soft autumn wind can make a mountain’s shadow waver in the light Falling to the ground, I watch a leaf settle down in a bed of brown. Don’t weep, little one— all things, like the stars themselves must part in the end.

How to Haiku: 5 Love’s only weakness 7 is also its greatest strength: 5 It defies reason. This is a modern haiku

How to Haiku: Uses 17 syllables, 3 lines, 5-7-5 Often based in nature Juxtaposes different ideas next to each other in order to make a point Creates a “snapshot” of a unique or powerful feeling/moment

My Haiku: When the lightning struck, he’s etched, flash-burned in mem’ry, welded to my soul. Mountains could represent a bully, and a soft autumn wind could represent kind words spoken to an individual who has been bullied. The one who has been bullied is carrying around the sadness and hurt (the mountain’s shadow) as if they cannot be rid of it themselves. With this interpretation, this poem could be saying that all it takes is for someone to step up and show kindness towards that person, to stand up for them, and that will go further than the harsh words/actions of a bully ever will.

Your turn… Now, begin crafting your own Haiku 5-7-5 Pick one of the 5 types of love as your emphasis and give your perspective on it (not some general lovey-dovey mush) Create a snapshot (pivotal or powerful moment) Use a metaphor or simile to tie emotion to nature

A soft autumn wind can make a mountain’s shadow waver in the light. How to Haiku: A soft autumn wind can make a mountain’s shadow waver in the light. This is a more traditional haiku Mountains could represent a bully, and a soft autumn wind could represent kind words spoken to an individual who has been bullied.
