Presentation transcript:

Science Fact an observation that has been repeatedly confirmed and for all practical purposes is accepted as “true.” Ex. There are seven days in a week

Science Hypothesis A statement about the natural world leading to deductions that can be tested. The purpose of a hypothesis is to explain one or more observations. Ex. If I change the battery in my car I will get better gas mileage.

Science Theory In science, a well- substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that can incorporate facts, inferences, and tested hypotheses. Ex. Evolution

Science Law A descriptive generalization about how some aspect of the natural world behaves under stated circumstances. Can be represented as an equation Ex. Kepler’s Law, planetary motion are three scientific laws describing the motion of planets around the Sun.

Let’s Test Our Knowledge Determine if the next statement is fact , hypothesis, Law, Theory or Belief.

Fact, Hypothesis, Law, Theory or Belief??? 1. The Big Bang Theory 2. For every action there is an equal reaction. Law 3. Crop circles are created by extraterrestrials Belief 4. Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit Fact 5. If I water the plant then it will grow. Hypothesis

Summary (in your own words): What is the difference between theory, law, and hypothesis? What is the difference between facts and beliefs?

20 Statements Below are 20 statements. On page 10 in your Notebook, write the statement in the box you believe the statement to be. Ex: Big Bang you would write in the theory box
