Global Agricultural Monitoring Ian Jarvis, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Soon to be… GEOGLAM Secretariat Side Event: GEOGLOWS and the Harmonization of GEO Water Activities

Mission / Objectives and Goals G20 Agriculture Ministers Policy Mandate. Improved information on agricultural production to reduce the volatility of commodity markets and support early warning in food insecure regions Objectives To strengthen the international community’s capacity to produce & disseminate relevant, timely and accurate information & forecasts on agricultural production at national, regional & global scales, through reinforced use of Earth Observations

GEOGLAM Actors GEOGLAM Community of Practice Open Community made up of international and national agencies concerned with agricultural monitoring including Ministries of Ag, Space agencies, Universities, & Industry 3/XX 3 / 21

Geographical Scope Methodology Text text text Project Governance Structure Community of practice (best effort-common interest), now transitioning to more formal structure

Significant achievements in 2016-2017 Monthly crop monitor - Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) ADD IMAGES Achievement Joint Experiments for Crop Assessment and Monitoring (JECAM) Achievement Early Warning Crop Monitor - Food in-secure nation Achievement Asian Rice Crop Estimation & Monitoring (AsiaRiCE)

Plans and Deliverables for 2018-2019 Establish more quantitative metrics related to crop production Move beyond current state monitoring to look at within season forecasts and monitoring the changes in agricultural distribution and production through time (i.e. SDG’s and Climate Change Impacts) Strengthen the transition from Research to Operations for crop monitoring at the national level: look for mechanisms to accelerate the transfer of R&D Represent the observation needs of the Community of Practice e.g. CEOS EO requirements for agriculture for 2025-2030, promote international virtual constellation for agriculture Provide a cloud-based, GEOGLAM collaborative community for data management and analytics Develop a Knowledge Management System (KMS) to hold contributory project results (tools, best practices, data products, etc.)

Plans for cross SBA linkages and SDG support Links to other SBAs or initiatives Many linkages. One area of potential collaboration with the water community is around surface soil moisture and evapotranspiration-Evaporative Stress Indicies Contributions to SDGs Communication Challenge: SDG metrics to date have been defined primarily by the statistical community. Little direct interaction between GEOGLAM and the SDG’s at the global, regional or national level. Challenges and Issues: Current State: Metrics are largely qualitative assessments of growing conditions based on science based agro-climate and remote sensing information integrated with human observation GEOGLOWS and the Harmonization of GEO Water Activities
