WORK, POWER, & EFFICIENCY SIMPLE MACHINES

WHAT ARE SIMPLE MACHINES? A simple machine is a device with few, if any, moving parts that makes it easier to do work. Simple machines can change the force that is needed or the direction or distance through which a force is applied. The two main classes of simple machines are the lever and the inclined plane. The lever class includes the wheel and axle and the pulley. The incline plane class includes the wedge and the screw.

WHAT ARE SIMPLE MACHINES? The Lever class The Incline Plane Class

Mechanical Advantage Most simple machines change the size of the force that is applied to them. The number of times a simple machine multiplies the effort force is called mechanical advantage You can find the mechanical advantage of simple machine by dividing the output force by the effort force.

Input Work and Output Work Work happens when a force makes an object move. As the mechanical advantage increases, the amount of work remeinds the same. However, the effort that one makes is less, while the machine helps complete the task.

Compound Machines When two or more simple machines are combined, they form a compound machine. For example, scissors include two levers and two wedges.

Assignment: Complete an anchor chart showing the six simple machines. Make sure you identify the three different class levers.
