What are PNs and PAs? If a sentence has a linking verb, there is no action going on, and it cannot have a direct object However, it MUST have a predicate nominative (PN) or predicate adjective (PA) A PA is an adjective in the predicate that describes the subject EX: She is happy S LV PA A PN is a noun in the predicate that refers to the subject EX: She is a teacher. S LV PN Both of these things are describing or related to the SUBJECT

Both PAs and PNs are diagrammed on the main baseline like a DO But this time, the half line after the verb is a diagonal one, slanted back toward the subject to which it refers S V PN or PA

Diagram the following sentence: Susan was very tired.
