Outlines! Pay Attention!

See additional sheet to review header/heading information See additional sheet to review header/heading information. How about we pay attention this time? MLA Set Up

Don’t Use Them! This time, you will lose a point for each one, unlike last time. Contractions

Personal Pronouns Don’t use YOU, YOU’RE, YOUR, I, MY, ME, etc. YOU will receive a very nasty message on YOUR paper if YOU do. Personal Pronouns

Remember to write about literature in PRESENT TENSE!

Don’t ask questions!!!!! Any questions? Attention Getters

Some of you used lead-ins that were from the novel Some of you used lead-ins that were from the novel. That is called plagiarizing. You may not do that. Write your own lead-ins. Make sure you have a lead in. You should use either a comma (incomplete thought), or a colon (complete sentence) before inserting a quote. Lead-Ins

Do not begin your purpose statements with phrases like, “This shows Lennie’s loneliness…” or “This quote shows Candy’s loneliness…” I know it is difficult, but you need to try something else. Make sure you read the comments on your outlines. Phrases in Purpose

When something belongs to someone, you need to make it possessive When something belongs to someone, you need to make it possessive. For example: Curley’s Wife Curley’s Wife’s dream Lennie and George’s dream Crooks’s bunkhouse (yes, it should be s apostrophe s) Many people’s dreams Curley is the boss’s son Their is also possessive Possessives

Hello, people. If you are going to write a paper about a novel, spell the characters’ names correctly! LENNIE GEORGE CURLEY CURLEY’s WIFE CROOKS CARLSON JOHN STEINBECK Funny…you all spelled Candy and Slim correctly. Spelling

“ ‘S’pose they was a carnival or a circus come to town, or a ball game, or any damn thing.’ Old Candy nodded in appreciation of the idea. ‘We’d just go to her,’ George said. ‘We wouldn’t ask nobody if we could. Jus’ say, ‘We’ll go to her, an’ we would. Jus’ milk the cow and sling some grain to the chickens an’ go to her’ ” (60-61). Make sure you check your sheet for information on using quotation marks properly. Citing

About 90% of you refuse to use transitions in your paper, even though the outline tells you to write on. I won’t lose points off my paper, but you will. Transitions

Background Information In intro: Writing…. Of Mice and Men is a novel written by John Steinbeck about two friends…is not enough. Give it some thought, people. You’re just being lazy. Make sure your background info before your quotes actually goes with the quote. Make sure you have enough so that a non-reader of the book can follow your point. Background Information

Don’t forget to have a works cited page!

You will lose points if you don’t use commas in compound sentences: George takes care of Lennie, but he is often frustrated with Lennie’s mental disability. You will lose points if you don’t use commas after introductory clauses/phrases: After Lennie kills Curley’s wife, he is upset that he will not be able to tend the rabbits . Commas

This is it, people. I read through your entire outlines (minus the conclusions!), which took my entire weekend. Next weekend, I will be grading your final papers. Don’t waste more of my time. Take my advice and fix everything I corrected for you on your outline. If you do not, you will not have a happy teacher or a pretty grade! Also, this is the last grade of the quarter. Keep that in mind ;) No Rewrites!
